I'm getting more and more of a feeling over the years that many Christians/religious people don't truly believe, but feel there must be an objective truth to the universe and just throw their hat in with their chosen deity. ie to many, their faith isn't much different than some atheist thinking the Bible is like some fictional book -Chicken Soup for the Human "Soul" and a Collection of Tall Tales-

Same here. Assuming you have good understanding of American culture (as I do), when you learn about other Western countries they tend to be FAR less religious than the U.S. I think Americans will eventually catch up but that will depend on education and genetics. See the movie Idiocracy.

My thought is that religion's place in society has more to do with evolutionary psychology than anything. Survival. Put simply, if you want to have a girlfriend or wife and you want to look good among your co-workers/neighbors you better go along with their religion. Being a non-conformist will kill your chances of having a mate or getting a promotion in many places, I feel. Just a hypothesis. The blacks & gays think they have it bad. Try being an atheist.

Yeah. Plus when a tribe/group has a consistent set of beliefs it helps create cohesion necessary for defense. The U.S. Marines have a creed and they are damn cohesive. Religion has roots in biology I would suppose. Anyway the Myers Briggs Type Indicator personality profiles show the "Thinkers" to not be a majority. Translation: a typical human doesn't think too much. Theism is no surprise.

Just as a reminder, Evolutionary Theory, is like Number Theory in that numbers are "real" just as evolution is accepted fact (well, not to those who reject science). And if evolution becomes no longer accepted fact, that does NOT give evidence of God's existence (obviously). In fact, a person can be an atheist and believe weird stuff i.e. aliens have tinkered with DNA thus creating new species or that Brittany Spears has actual talent.

Why is it always a "bunny" and in the "pre-Cambrian"? The famous quote comes from the biologist J.B.S. Haldane. But as middlekk said, a dog would do just as well. In fact, find ANY fossil mammal in the pre-Cambrian and you blow evolution apart the very definition of falsifiability. The reason the Theory of Evolution is so solid is because every time rocks are blasted or quarried or investigated we never find fossils out of their chronological order.
